When reading To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian by Stephen Ambrose I was truly surprised or so what he wrote in his ordinal essay. In all of the essays before that one he wrote to the highest degree facts and the truth but in the thirteenth one he wrote about his own true feelings and how they affected his life. During this essay he wrote about how he was asked by his boss at the conviction to write a biography on the life of Richard Nixon, the thirty-seventh president of the United States. Ambrose recalled the conversation he had with his boss and in it being very blunt he said that, I dont even deal the guy. later on he said that his boss dared him to do it by saying where else cannister you find a bigger repugn? This caused Ambrose to accept the challenge and write about a man he doesnt even like. Earlier in the chapter Ambrose wrote that in his eyes Nixon seemed like he would always lie to advance his personal cause. Ambrose was very direct when showing his feelings about Nixon. I was a littler surprised by his obvious dislike towards Nixon but go through now based on his cerebrate. Later on in the chapter when he had finished writing the book on Nixon his feelings had changed towards him.

He said that later writing the first tidy sum on him he absorbed to admire him, after volume two he had a genuine and deep admiration for his policies and after volume three to his astonishment had found a liking for him. After learning as much about him as likely he started to gain an understanding on some of the reasoning behind many of his decisions. This surprised me when he started liking Nixon after writing a biography on him because if you dislike a man and learn more about him then you would start to dislike him more but in this case Ambrose went into the post with an open mind and left feeling positive about Nixon.
