The DSM-IV

The DSM-IV is an important tool for clinicians. It provides a lean of common mental indispositions, diagnostic criteria, guidelines, and standard for diagnoses across the ambit of psychology. However, the DSM-IV is not as precise for diagnosing personality disorders as some psychologists would like.

Review Chapter 13 in your text as well as Figure 13-1 regarding Central and Prominent Features of character Disorders (Comer, 2005, p.387).

1.Why are personality disorders listed on Axis II of the DSM-IV?
Anytime there is a clinical evaluation of a diligent it should include axis II personality disorder pathology. A general assessment is conducted to determine the generic elements of a personality disorder are present. The patient will be assets in personality disturbance, such as cognitive eccentricity, socially, isolative sort, impulsivity, mood dysregulation, or anxiety-driven patterns of port and there they can determine if there is a disorder or not.

2.List the disorders contained in each of the triad clusters of personality disorders?
The first cluster would be odd behavior and it consists of paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal personality disorders.



The second cluster is dramatic behavior which consists of antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders. The last cluster is a high degree of anxiety and includes the avoidant, dependant, and obsessive compulsive personality disorders.

3.Which Axis I disorders do each of the Personality Disorders check?
Some of the personality disorders may have exchangeable kind to a particular Axis I conditions schizotypal personality disorder with schizophrenia; avoidant personality disorder with social phobia.
