Oedipus: Pride and Hubris
In the play Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, the main character, Oedipus, realizes that excessive pluck throne concealment ones self from the reality of life. Pride can not get in the way of ones life as this never results in a comfortably outcome.
Had it not been for Oedipuss pride, he may have recognise he was attacking the King. As a hero, pride in ones self is a good thing. However, in addition oft of it is a weakness. Oedipus proves his pride by saying, And justly you forget see in me an ally, a champion of my country and the matinee idol (474). Oedipus announces that he is a great hero and implies, to the audience, that he cannot fail. He is so busy trying to find the manslayer that he does not stop and theorize about his encounter with a man on the road. Had he thought the scene by means of he may have realized that he is the murderer of King Lauis. The man he killed was riding in a carriage with many guards. This detail should have made him think twice about slaying everyone.
Oedipuss pride overshadows the prophesiers prophecy that he will kill his set about and lay with his mother. After hearing of his future, Oedipus leaves his, supposed, parents thinking he has avoided his pitiful destiny.



He was very sure of himself when said, They prophesied that I should kill my paternity! But he is dead, and hidden deep in earth, and I stand here who never laid a move over on spear against him (505). Now in the city of Thebes, he believes the prophecy was avoided. Pride keeps him from analyzing his current situation and realizing that he has slide by into the very fate he tried to escape.
Oedipuss pride keeps him from seeing that he is existence told the truth by Creon magic spell he was accusing him of being a murderer. Oedipus has so much pride that he does not even realize that Creon is being truthful to him. This was demonstrated when he said, When he that plots against me secretly moves quickly, I must quickly counterplot (490).
