Grandfather
My grandfather was a difficult but hard-working man until the twenty-four hour period he died. I’ve grown to admire and miss him much and much as time has passed. On any minded(p) day I could drive onto our family’s sixty landed estate and find him on one of our tractorsbush hogging the property. My grandfather was an unstoppable crash with a sense of determination that I love, but sometimes this unstoppable force met an immovable object-- we ended up with a lot of broken tractors.
His hands were always calloused adept like his mannerisms, and when he narrowed his piercing blue eye at you, youfelt as if he was fingering straight into your soul. He always dressed with military precision, insisting on looking presentable at all times. Even while working, he wore his usual khaki pants hiked half way up his belly and his white linen shirt that always remained tucked. No grandfather ensemble would be complete though, without his wide brimmed angry walk hat that you could see moving up and down the rows of our field every day. He always smelled of Irish Spring goo and the rich musk of the dirt he just worked—I loved that smell.
His voice always carried an authoritative edge that made you feel like you were under a microscope.



Years of working for the CIA had apt(p) his expression a vibration of power that no grandchild dared to defy. My best-loved way of remembering his voice was when he’d place you down and tell stories. When he was speaking of the past his tone mellowed into a reprieve that reminded me of the buttery candies he’d give usfrom his shirt pocket. In his dying days, he told me more and more of those stories in a desperate, soft narrative, as if he was scrambling to tell all he could to the younger generation out front his time ran out. Although it was his stubborn nature that held you there for hours listening, it was the way he made you feel important and apart of his stories that kept you postponement expectantly for more.
